Iraklion is the capital of Crete and the starting point for visitors to Knossos. It is lively all through the year thanks to the students who study at the university there, and it is full of interesting sights, hotels, cafes, rakadika (tavernas serving Raki, the famous Cretan spirit) and pedestrian streets and squares where you can enjoy countless walks. Because of all this, the city of Heraklion, which was once called Chandax, is always a major attraction for visitors. You can go to the Archaeological Museum, the Historical Museum and the Natural History Museum of Crete, walk along the Venetian walls, admire the Venetian harbour and the Venetian fortress "Rocca al Mare" (known locally as Koules), the Aghios Titus church, the Town Hall (the Loggia) and the square with the lion fountain.
